1st for Women Foundation
Combating Gender-Based Violence through Empowerment and Support
The 1st for Women Foundation is committed to addressing and preventing gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa. Through partnerships with various organizations and innovative programs, the Foundation provides critical support and resources to women and children affected by violence, empowering them to reclaim their lives and fostering a culture of safety and respect.
One of the key partners of the 1st for Women Foundation is Action Breaks Silence, a charity dedicated to preventing violence against women and girls by involving young South Africans in the process. Sharing her personal experience of being raped twice in primary school and her subsequent journey to prevent such atrocities from happening to others, Action Breaks Silence founder, Debi Stevens, explains how the program focuses on building self-awareness among girls, teaching them they have the right to feel safe and be free from physical, emotional, financial and sexual abuse.
Action Breaks Silence operates in communities like Diepsloot where gender-based violence is prevalent. Research identified Diepsloot as a hotspot, prompting the organization to pilot their program there. By teaching self-defence, not only physically but also psychologically, they empower women and girls to protect themselves and build confidence. The collaboration with 1st for Women has been pivotal as the Foundation brought together various stakeholders and experts to enhance the impact of the program.
Recognising that perpetrators of violence are predominantly male, the Foundation and its partners focus on engaging boys and men in the fight against GBV. Programs aim to transform them into champions for peace rather than carriers of violence and trauma. One participant shared how the program teaches boys to choose peace over violence, instilling values that promote respect and non-violence.
1st for Women’s financial contributions have been substantial with close to 100 million rand donated to initiatives fighting GBV. One of the beneficiaries is the Legal and Vulnerable Assistance (LVA) organization which provides free legal and counselling services to the community of Diepsloot. They assist clients with protection orders and ongoing legal cases and also offer therapy for survivors of domestic violence and minors who have been sexually violated. This integrated approach ensures that clients receive comprehensive support and are empowered to seek help and assert their rights.
The Foundation’s impact extends beyond financial support. Customers of 1st for Women Insurance join a community of fearless women committed to fighting GBV. The Foundation’s support enables organizations like Action Breaks Silence and LVA to achieve remarkable results, creating a safer and more just society for women and girls.
The 1st for Women Foundation is not just addressing the symptoms of GBV but is actively working towards long-term solutions by empowering young people as agents of social change. ACWA Power, a global leader in independent power production, is making significant strides in South Africa with its innovative Redstone Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) project in the Northern Cape. Utilising advanced CSP technology, the Redstone project harnesses the power of the sun to generate clean, reliable energy, while also making a profound impact on local communities through skill development, employment opportunities and community upliftment initiatives.
The Redstone project employs cutting-edge technology, using a vast array of mirrors to focus sunlight onto a central receiver at the top of a tower. This concentrated solar energy heats molten salt, which is then used to produce steam that drives turbines to generate electricity. This system not only provides a sustainable energy source but also creates job opportunities during both the construction and operational phases of the project.
One of ACWA Power’s core commitments is to leave a lasting legacy in the areas where it invests, particularly by addressing youth unemployment in South Africa. As part of this commitment, the Redstone project has implemented several initiatives to train and empower local youth. Twenty young individuals from the local community were selected to travel to Dubai for hands-on training at a sister plant, providing them with invaluable experience and exposure to advanced solar power technology. This training prepared them for roles as control room operators and water treatment plant operators at Redstone, equipping them with skills that will benefit them throughout their careers.
Priscilla Portello, a 23-year-old from Groenwater station, is one of the beneficiaries of this program. Despite coming from a community with high unemployment rates and limited educational opportunities, Priscilla has gained practical skills and experience through the Redstone program. Her training in Dubai was a life-changing experience, and she now looks forward to a promising career as a Junior Control Room Operator.
In addition to individual training programs, ACWA Power is also committed to enhancing local educational infrastructure. The company has supported local schools by providing technical equipment and installing security measures to protect these valuable resources. This support enables students to engage in practical learning experiences which are essential for pursuing careers in technical fields.
Community upliftment is another key focus of ACWA Power’s initiatives. The company has contributed to the establishment and improvement of community libraries, providing access to computers and books that aid in education and job applications. These libraries serve as vital resources for local residents, helping them to further their education and improve their employment prospects.
Furthermore, the Redstone project includes an apprenticeship program that offers comprehensive training in electrical and mechanical engineering. Apprentices receive practical training at sister plants, ensuring they gain the necessary skills to succeed in the energy sector. Kolomela Mine: A Lifeline of Water for Tsantsabane.
In the far northern reaches of South Africa, Kolomela Mine, a part of Anglo American, plays a pivotal role in a water-scarce region where groundwater is both a critical resource and a hidden treasure. The mine’s dewatering process, essential for maintaining dry mining conditions, not only supports mining operations but also provides a lifeline of water to the surrounding communities.
Kolomela’s operations extract large volumes of groundwater, ensuring that mining can continue uninterrupted. This water is used within the mine for dust suppression, beneficiation processes and daily consumption by employees. But the mine’s impact extends beyond its fences—excess water is transferred to the Vaal Central Water Board which, in turn, supplies the Tsantsabane Municipality, including the town of Postmasburg.
In a region that relies heavily on groundwater, this contribution is invaluable. Tsantsabane faces challenges with water supply, exacerbated by economic growth and a rising population. As more people flock to Postmasburg for work opportunities, the demand for water increases, putting pressure on local infrastructure. Anglo American’s collaboration with the municipality has been crucial in addressing these challenges.
One significant effort includes repairing leaks in the old pipeline that supplies water to the Bosdien Reservoir where outdated clamps were causing the loss of 500 litres per second. Anglo’s intervention, including the provision of new clamps, has been instrumental in reducing these losses and ensuring a more reliable water supply.
Moreover, Anglo has drilled three new boreholes connected to the local pipeline, further boosting the water supply. These boreholes are vital for meeting the community’s growing needs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Anglo took additional steps to ensure that even informal settlements had access to water, installing bulk water meters and putting up emergency water reticulation systems.
In addition to physical infrastructure, Anglo American is also investing in capacity building. The company has partnered with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to enhance the municipality’s capabilities in borehole monitoring, infrastructure assessment, water safety planning and strategic planning. This transfer of skills is vital for the long-term sustainability of water management in the region.
For local farmers, the mine’s efforts have been particularly significant. Farmers like those at Gatkoppies, a heritage site rich with the history of the San and Khoi people, have struggled with water access despite being close to the main water line. Through dialogue with the municipality, these farmers are now beginning to see improvements in their water supply.

The Mbewu program, named after the word for “seed”, focuses on nurturing startups from their inception. By providing essential resources and support, Mbewu helps budding entrepreneurs transform their ideas into viable businesses – like Ntlotleng Manale, who turned dormant family land into productive farmland and received the funding for a borehole, water storage and irrigation from the program. This support enabled the expansion of agricultural activities, increased employment and paved the way for future growth into agro-processing.

Through procurement contracts and an interest-free loan, Makwande’s exponential growth was enabled, obtaining its services from jet fuel transportation to nationwide retail deliveries and an extensive fleet servicing a variety of clients across the country.
BP’s dedication to transformation also targets ownership patterns within service stations in its network. By 2025, the goal is for 70% of these stations to be owned by black individuals, contributing to economic empowerment and inclusivity. The company is well on track to achieving this target. Mabona Selebogo is one such service station owner. A finance graduate who invested her life savings in the business, she has flourished with the support and partnership of BP South Africa. They have assisted her cash flow through the provision of consignment stock and invested in mentorship programs to provide emerging entrepreneurs with valuable guidance on business operations, creating a supportive network within the industry and ensuring these businesses are set up to succeed.
Education also emerges as a global priority for BP SA, exemplified by significant investments in the Energy Mobility Education Trust. Scholarships that take a holistic stance to educational support are key to this objective, covering tuition, stipends and mentorship support for students pursuing degrees in transport and logistics management.
These initiatives align with BP’s broader vision of inclusivity and equity and pave the way for young individuals to actively participate in the economy, fostering a generation of empowered and skilled professionals.

The program provides live online sessions in maths and science for grades 11 and 12 learners and has significantly improved results, with the school consistently achieving over 90% pass rates in both subjects with students attesting to the vastly positive impact this e-learning opportunity has had on their academic performance.
Recognising the challenges faced by female learners, Glencore also launched the Khululeka campaign, supplying sanitary pads to girls in grades 7 to 12 at this, and other schools, in the region. The initiative facilitates increased attendance and confidence among female students and addresses this unnecessary barrier to education.

Residents have first-hand experience with the devastating impact of fires in their communities. One resident recalls a fire in 2017 that destroyed their home and business, leaving many without the means to rebuild. Lumkani’s fire detection system and insurance coverage have since provided a safety net for many in similar situations. Another client shared how the fire detection system alerted them to a fire, allowing timely intervention and subsequent insurance support to rebuild their home.
Lumkani’s approach emphasizes local engagement by hiring women from the communities they serve. This not only provides employment but also ensures that the agents are relatable and trusted within the community. This initiative has impacted many women, with 70% of Lumkani’s customer base being women. Over the past three years, Lumkani’s efforts have saved an estimated 145 million rands worth of informal property from fires and paid out 20 million rands in claims to help homeowners recover.

It includes a dedicated Thuthuka program manager at universities and academic trainees, like Dineo, a former beneficiary, who offers direct support and guidance to students.
Thuthuka also provides life skills support, extra classes and development camps to ensure students are well-prepared for the challenges of university life and the accounting profession. Additionally, mentorship programs connect qualified chartered accountants with Thuthuka beneficiaries, offering guidance on career paths and firm choices.
